Kestrel's Journals: Queen’s Royal Knight (12)

With screams from the gate guards of “Our Queen’s Knight returns!”, a pathway opened before us to enter the gate unhindered. A small contingent of guards wearing royal livery sashes escorted us directly to the castle as joyful cheers surrounded us. Young Redpath waved, bowed, and shook hands with the crowd that had appeared along our path to Diadem’s castle. Our momentum did not pause until we reach the castle’s gate where an old man with a staff stood stiffly barring our path. Our feline moved easily to stand facing him in a silent staring contest.

You took your time returning.” the old man snorted still glaring at young Redpath. “And you bring us company as well?” he added still blocking our way.

Much needed to be done in Her Highness’s name to prove she truly loves her people.” young Kestrel retorted. “And my guest is the great honorable Envoy of Atlantis, my master and lord.” he continued louder for all to hear. A murmur of amazement crawled around us as the ring of guards suddenly stiffened to a proper military attention. “I don’t have time for this Greyman, Dia’s pet cat Knight must be kneeling before her the moment I enter her city.” he meowed exasperated. The old man started laughing before hugging him.

You are not pet in her eyes Altantian knightly hero and greatest friend.” Greyman returned patting his back.

Very happy being meet by you grand father.” the feline returned hugging and patting him back.

Grand father!” Meli grasped staring blankly forward at the scene.

A term of endearment possibly.” Sert remarked with a shrug. My laughter flowed around them gaining attention from all of them, my team, Greyman, the royal guards, and even the crowd. “Sir?” my warrior added confused. I dismounted without help landing slightly hard upon my feet before my walking stick was firmly in my grasp touching the ground. I moved slowly forward towards the old man to stand beside my name sake. I bowed deeply before him still smiling and trying to hold back my laughter.

Lord Kestrel, Envoy of Atlantis, requesting an audience with her majesty, Queen Diadem, regarding the behavior of my newest guard.” I announced unable to hold back chuckles. The old man looked at me smirking as young Redpath looked from me to Greyman, and back looking worried. A choking laughter escaped Sert while Meli started groaning in annoyance. “Best to hear directly from this old noble sage and her majesty directly than simply wait for your report, yes?” I teased the feline with a smirk of my own. He sighed and nodded in silence. The gate creaked open and a woman in armor slipped out.

You should stop this childishness, Magus Greyman.” the woman stated towards the old man. “The Queen wishes her Knight at her side.” she continued bluntly. As she turned to face me with cold eyes, I notices the silvery scythe pendant at her throat. “Envoy, your request is accepted easily so we may all praise your guard’s most noble deeds.” she told me with a nod of her head. “The guards will get those supplies transferred to the needy within the city while you and your friends are presented to the Queen directly.” she directed towards the feline. “Please follow me.” she concluded. She took young Redpath’s arm and placed it at her elbow giving him a quick wink.

Thank you Artea, Priestess and honor guard to Queen Diadem.” he returned. He let her lead forward while I walk beside Greyman, with Sert and Meli bringing up the rear. I could see the quiet discussion between the honor guard and our kitten. I did wonder if anyone had realized how much younger Redpath was in comparison to Sert, Meli, or even myself. I did not want to state that young Kestrel of the Redpath clan was considered a child barely past the age of a toddler in Atlantian society. Even away from Atlantis, the Royal Guards lifespan was four to five time the length of humans while the normal Atlantians youngsters could lived twice as long as the humans in the outer world. I would not and could not stop him from remaining here but I would need to warn him of this longevity fact.

We are definitely not seen as a threat with only one guard escorting us.” Sert mused behind us.

Three.” I corrected him quickly. “Artea, Greyman, and our feline because he is a Knight in this land.” I clarified casually. “And neither of us would raise a weapon against him.” I added softly half to myself. A soft chuckle from Greyman told me he heard my final words.

No guard nor citizen would raise arms against that feline for what he has done for Dia.” he told me calmly. I sighed and nodded understand how easily my feline name sake had gained acceptance here. “I believe he may share more than your name.” the old man said with a shrug. “His honor and sense of duty comes from you, Envoy.” he concluded. A soft chuckle escaped me as I nodded my grudging agreement.

We arrived at the courtroom each taking our turn to introduce our selves while young Redpath stood to one side with Artea and Greyman stood upon our other side. The queen’s eyes barely looked at us during our introductions focusing more fully on the feline that was her chosen knight. I need not use any abilities to see where her heart lay and the look upon Redpath’s face showed he felt the same for her. I could not ponder if this was a simple infatuation born from their time together or truly a soul bound between them. Relatively I would have been at least hundred years younger than that feline when I found my soul bounded heart mate. I wish he never faced the pain her death caused me because his heart would be crushed beyond repair.

She rose as the last introduction was made. She took one hesitant step toward her knight. Looked around the room nervously received a quick nod from the Magus Greyman and a shaking head from Artea before she turned to look away with a shrug. With this simple reaction, we of Atlantis saw a sight none have seen before. She ran and threw herself upon Redpath who was toppled over from her actions. She buried her face in his fur clasping her body around his. The feline purred back placing his arms around her gently holding her against him. The strangled gasp from both Sert and Meli echoed through the room while the queen seemed to want to cling to her knight forever.

The exuberance of youth.” I commented but did not move from my place. I glanced at Greyman who sighed and shook his head. “We will ignore the young Queen’s greeting towards her Knight.” I continued with a smirk. “Even if it could be seen as undignified by lesser beings.” I added as a gentle reminder. Her face came up from Redpath’s furry chest to glare at me petulantly until she notices my smirk.

Undignified but required to punish the bad Kitty Knight.” she remarked sticking her tongue out at me. She returned to pressing her face against his fur while clamped onto his body tighter. A moment passed before her head snapped up to look at me with a mischievous gleam. “You are the one he calls master, yes?” she asked and I already knew her plan.

His decision to stay is his own and I cannot change this fact, Queen Diadem.” I answered bowing to her. “And his young age would prevent me from simply agreeing to him remaining here by your side.” I continued trying to hint what the problem truly would be if he remained behind. “He is barely one hundred while my other companions are in their three hundred years or so of life.” I informed her and waited for her to realize what I had stated.

What?” Artea and Greyman gasped in unison as Diadem’s eyes grew wide and her mouth worked wordlessly.

In Atlantis, our lifespan is nearly immortal while us human looking citizen can live twice the length a human can outside of Atlantis if we leave prior to a century of life.” Meli explained to reinforce my words.

And rumors state that the Royal Guardian bloodlines can span four to five human lifespans.” Sert chimed in quickly.

They speak truthfully Dia.” Redpath stated in a soft sad purr. “If I stay, I will witness your death which would destroy me.” he continued slowly. “And bringing you to Atlantis, so you may live as long as myself, would remove you from your people that need you, my Queen Diadem.” he revealed hesitantly. “Another stands near you that has accepted death as a sacrifice to bring you home safely.” he added. I watched his eyes move to look at Artea. He’s lips moved silently wording “Keep her safe as He wants from you”. He nodded to her before his hands lifted her towards Artea. Greyman’s eyes went from Kestrel to Artea and back again not understand what had happened.

Come my Queen, stand proudly for your Knight.” Artea stated as her hands where upon the queen’s shoulders. She helped her to stand as Redpath shifted to be upon one knee before her. “I give permission to tell her of my actions, kindred warrior.” she added toward the feline knight.

The priestess of Lord Death requested him to keep you safe until you returned to the throne, Dia.” he told her. “She offered her life for yours to be spared, Dia.” he stated quickly. “She stand behind you alive and as worthy as myself to be your Knight.” he concluded before bowing his head to her. I stiffened ready to challenge Death if he tried claiming Artea. A soft musical chuckle waft around the room before Lord Death appeared behind Kestrel.

You should not worry so much, Alal.” Death sand softly. “The cat knows I will only once her true duties are done.” he continued. No one moved frozen in place but witnessing all of it. “She must keep you safe from now own until you are both old a grey together, silly little Queen.” he concluded with a melodious chuckle. He did not fade or step away into shadows. He simply vanished with only his chuckle trailing after him.

Young Kestrel!” I snapped having him stand, turn, and face me. “You have been making very odd friends, have you not?” I asked with a raised eyebrow. He shrugged shrinking before me embarrassed. “You will truly grow into a good member of my retinue, kitten.” I added with a smile. He stared at me as his body straighten to his full height. The smile slowly grew on his face as he gave me a crisp salute. I nodded at him still smiling proudly for his actions while away from my team.

Maybe we should have taken a different path from Lord Kestrel.” Sert mused out loud. The smack of Meli’s hand across the back of his head was like a thunder clap in the room. “But he was able to...” he began and was cut into silence by another hard slap from Meli.

Hush! We are in a throne room, idiot warrior!” she chided him bluntly. She glared at him stopping him from speaking more upon this subject. “You have been so visible that you could have been capture for some festival side show or killed by priestly zealots!” she snapped at Kestrel releasing all her worries directly upon him. I felt the ground start trembling under our feet.

Enough!” I bellowed. The trembling floor slowed and stop as Meli looked annoyed and angry. “As a Royal Guard, his feral nature gives him better instincts than either of you two or Cole.” I told her with a hard edge in my voice. I turned back towards Kestrel who looked worried and fearful of Meli. “Lord Death shattered the blade with his scythe, correct Redpath?” I asked softly. He nodded to me remaining silent. “He has linked your life to hers Artea as payment for your prayers of protection for your Queen.” I told her with a nod. “Now can we return to a proper meeting with Her Royal Highness Diadem?” I added to the room. A shy chuckle escaped everyone present as we returned to the position we had taken upon entering the courtroom. Only Redpath changed his original position to stand next to Sert at my back to keep the warrior between Meli and himself. Dia held up a hand to signal Artea to move to her side as she stood before her throne.

Be well meet within my kingdom and castle, noble travelers from Atlantis.” she announced in a strong voice. “I, Queen Diadem, offer you anything you require to continue your voyages to return home.” she continued slightly softer. Her eyes remained on young Redpath during her speech. “Be at peace and safety within my walls, noble Atlantian friends.” she concluded glancing away from Redpath to Greyman. He smiled and nodded his pride of her royal speech making her relax.

You are a gracious and righteous ruler and we of Atlantis are humble to spend a few days, if possible, within your Royal Halls.” I returned taking a knee and bowing my head towards her. As I began to rise with difficulty, Meli and Kestrel were at my elbows while Sert placed a hand upon my back to steady me. “I am sorry but events have me mildly indisposed your Majesty.” I reported once fully standing. “My healer, Lady Mekiliean shall tend to me while my senior Honour Guard, Sertian will watch over us.” I continued formally. “I will leave young Redpath as our representative during this time.” I added giving Dia a quick wink.

Yes sir, but ...” Meli returned looking worried. She glanced towards Redpath as Sert replaced him at the opposing elbow.

As you command, Lord Kestrel.” Sert replied taking my arm to help support me.

Master.” the other Kestrel interjected quickly. “I am not trained as a diplomat, sir.” he reminded me nervously. I could see his tail lashing like a metronome behind him.

You will do as order.” Sert retorted before I could speak. “You have done as well as, if not better than, us during our first outing in the World.” he added with a smirk.

Well said Sert and I fully agree on his competence as our representative.” I stated calmly. I turned to be lead away with Meli and Sert helping me mildly. I knew Meli felt overprotective for Redpath as much, if not a bit more, than her protectiveness over Sert. A mix of pride and envy disturbed Sert’s emotions but he would not disobey my orders while I was present. Artea moved to escort us to prepared rooms for our stay. Greyman had accompanied us offer his limited medical knowledge as assistance but it was to actually give Redpath and Dia time in private together. As Greyman had Meli pulled aside discussing healing practices both herbal and magical, Artea and Sert stood by me.

Three days and we give the Queen as much time as possible with her Knight.” I told the two of them. “We must also keep Meli from interfering, understood?” I added looking from one to the other.

I thank thy for doing this for our Queen.” Artea stated softly under her breath to me. Sert simply nodded his agreement silently. “She needs to accept what must be and his presence will help her.” she continued slowly.

In this life, she may not have her chance, but she has many more lives to find him and be with him.” I interrupted her. “Or, it is mere infatuation and it will evaporate in her mind.” I added preventing more discussions. Artea nodded slowly with a sad smile on her face.

A queen, warriors, a magus, a demon madame, and harpies, I noted in my mind. I did not forget the only Old One that still walked freely upon the land, Lord Death. I feared for a moment who else he had met during his trip along this side of the mountains but put those worries aside. His future flared momentarily in my mind but few images appeared precise or clear to me. This could be a side effect of my weaken spiritual state but this cloudiness felt oddly familiar. His name was already set in every passing incarnations of his future lives: Kestrel Redpath. I could not fathom why this name was the one that would reflect mostly along his multiple lives but I knew this was a truth that could not be altered.

I did during the next three days observe him from a distance as the young Kestrel spoke and walked by Queen Diadem’s side. From his brief reports, she refused to request him staying but did ask about Atlantis often. By the last day, he handed me a missive from Queen Diadem that offered a place for the Royal Guards to vacation for nothing more than courteous behaviour towards her citizens. The zone set aside for them was large and those that live there would be strictly not allowed to attack them. I glance up at Redpath’s eyes as he shrugged back.

Dia has told me what was written but I cannot read it myself.” he informed me. “If something written there is unacceptable, I am not knowledgeable about it.” he added. I read the words to him and he smiled.

I will present this personally to the Throne, Guard Captains, and the Council of Atlantis.” I remarked with a smirk. “And they will know that the youngest member that has stepped away from Atlantis made this possible to them.” I told him. His eyes went wide and, I believe, he actually blushed at my words. “Meli will start teaching you to read and write so you may converse with Queen Diadem.” I added making him smile and shiver excitedly.

And with this, we prepared to leave Queen Diadem’s castle with a trio of horses, and our packs and hearts much lighter. We would make good time crossing through and out of Dia’s kingdom southern sections and make it to the pass between the mountains. After the mountain pass, we would be less than half day away from the port town where the Herald would be collecting us. The time in the saddle was, unfortunately, harder on my body than my two human like companions. Young Kestrel seemed to have no problem keeping up with our more rapid speed seemingly enjoy the chance to run and play along our pathway. I pulled our ranks closer together as the pass came into view but that was not require this time.

Redpath's Journals: Returning To Rouge’s Brothel (12)

Dawn had barely risen as we made our way through the eastern alleys and streets. Sert and Hawke were no longer bickering as they did most of the previous day as we roamed the northern pathways of the city. Outside the comments about a possible war between the Northern and Eastern Kingdoms and minor remarks about the safety they now had on their southern borders was all the whispered rumors we discovered. We did not expect much difference considering a potential war would have guards nervous and distracted but it felt weak to Sert and Hawke. An hour past true dawn had a message dropping into our midst followed by a trumpeting series of squawks high in the sky. I flipped the scroll with my foot to my hand before handing it to Sert. He starred dumbly at me at first while taking the rolled message from my outstretched paw.

I cannot read.” I told him. It was only partially a lie. I had learn the simple common words of this area but the flowery script of Atlantis still eluded my knowledge. I could not know if the message held Atlantian or common words but would be faster handing to my senior than misreading word from our Master. Sert quickly went over the note before reading out loud to us.

The wagon can be pulled out and made ready easily.” Hawke remarked. “If what the harpies have told you is true, your Master could use the easier method of transportation, yes?” he added quickly.

Has Lord Kestrel expended his strength during curing the plague?” I asked Sert directly. I had already heard Him, whom I serve, speak truthfully of how weak He was, but did not know how much of this information was divulged to his retinue. Sert sighed and shrugged while shifting into Atlantian once more.

Meli and I worry that Lord Kestrel pushed himself beyond his abilities.” he admitted in a hoarse whisper. “Meli saw him using his full powers to save a child even if he states he called upon the Ones on High he serves but...” he continued slowly.

But she sensed the magic pouring out of him only.” I concluded his thought in common. Meli would have known and sensed Lord Kestrel true state but would not challenge his words. “The wagon is for supplies for Queen Diadem’s nation which gives him a chance to relax more until we reach Her Royal Capitol.” I told Sert with wry smirk and quick wink. “He need not know that we are taking care of him.” I added. With a nod, Sert agreed as our trio changed our path to return to the Eastern Gates of the city.

We had the wagon fully loaded and ready with Sert already upon the driver’s seat with reigns in hand when we noticed Kestrel approaching us. I stood by the wagon while Hawke sat upon his mount at the far side of the wagon. A secondary seat had been arranged originally upon the wagon specifically to allow Lord Kestrel and Meli to ride safely and more comfortably. My Master stopped as he eyed the wagon waving a hand towards it but I need not speak as Hawke took control of this situation.

Transporting supplies to villages giving an easier travel path for my feline friend’s master.” he announced from behind his visor. His armor glowed in the early morning light like burnished bronze. He lifted his visor to smile broadly at Lord Kestrel. “Cavalier Hawke from the Southern lands at your service, sir.” he continued with a bow from his saddle. With this distraction started, I had moved to take Lord Kestrel’s other arm and pull him forward to the secondary set of seat. Meli assisted getting him in place before with an offered paw, I had her quickly sitting to watch over our Master during this trip.

Accept our lie and simply accept this comfort, sir.” I purred in a whisper to him. “Sert has filled my gaps in information about your weakened state, sir.” I continued in the same whispering purr. My eyes locked with his for but a moment where even I could see the fatigue hidden there and in his face.

I agree with you Royal Honor Guard.” Meli stated loudly and more firmly than my purring. She motion that I take the place next to Sert at the front of the wagon. I grudgingly obeyed her but knew I would be back upon my feet moving as quickly once we have cleared the city proper. “Let’s not look upon providence offered for a faster trip towards home, sir.” she added bluntly. After giving each of us a harsh glare, he finally nodded his agreement and relaxed upon his seat. The wagon shook under us as Sert snapped the reigns getting the horses to move forward pulling us through the gates in silence. I leaped to stride upon the other side of the twin horses pulling our wagon with Hawke upon the other side as we finally found ourselves upon the road. Meli eventually moved to the front seat beside Sert while Lord Kestrel sat napping or meditating comfortably upon the secondary seat. I glanced from Hawke, to Sert, to Meli, and back to the cavalier before speaking.

Without side adventures, we should be able to reach Rouge’s village by dusk, correct?” I asked Hawke. He unconsciously scratched at his chin under his head gear showing he was calculation our chances.

As long as we keep up a good pace without harming the horses, dusk will find us at Mistress’ Rouge’s doorsteps.” he returned casually. “I am sure she’ll be happy that we’ve returned her way.” he added with a soft chuckle.

Not as happy as those two sisters that want your heart, Cavalier.” I remarked quickly with a purring chuckle.

We are heading towards a noble’s residence?” Sert stated slowly.

Mistress is a title akin to master.” Meli reminded him. “She must be a minor noble living away from the Royal Capitol or of a different nation.” she mused softly to herself but out loud.

Rouge’s village is just past the borderlines of Queen Diadem’s lands.” Hawke informed her.

Is her proper title Madame Rouge or Mistress Rouge?” I asked the cavalier. I already knew she went by both those titles and even the title Lady Rouge, but the reaction on Sert’s face showed he knew this mild difference in titles. Hawke simply shrugged but did not make any comments back to me. “The servers in her establishment have used both so it might be interchangeable in her case.” I concluded purring under my breath.

I have never heard such a title before.” Meli commented perplexed. “Why would Madame be used as a title?” she asked looking at Sert and then the two of us. I followed the cavalier’s answer of a silent shrug. I could see the hint of pinkish red forming on Sert’s cheek as he knew what the title referred but could not believe we were heading towards a brothel. A smirking glanced passed between the cavalier and myself as we continued chatting about the road ahead and the weather ignoring mentioning anything more about our first stop at dusk.

With the last rays of the sun disappeared over the horizon, our wagon pulled into the entrance pathway of Rouge’s establishment. Many villagers came to trade with us while Sert, Meli, and Lord Kestrel eyed the brothel closely and nervously. Two of the Madame servants came to replace us while Hawke’s beauties came to collect us. I did not get far before both Sert and Meli had me pulled aside.

Do you know what type of business this is?” Meli whisper shrieked at me.

This is not a place we should be considering staying even for a meal, let alone a night!” Sert commented annoyed and blushing. Hawke had moved to stand at my side glaring at them while the sister stayed at our side silently waiting. I must admit my feral anger did get the better of me at this moment.

Yes, we know what type of establishment this is!” I growled, or maybe roared, at them gaining Lord Kestrel’s attention. “It is truly the safest place we could stay the night!” I continued not hiding my anger in a snarling growl at them.

But it’s a...” Meli snapped but could complete her sentence.

Lady Rouge’s place is an acceptable choice!” Kestrel squawked at us. I saw them tense and slowly turn to face him. “And yes, I should stop in for a discussion with Rouge, Little Kestrel.” he added directly at me. This brought a shocked look on my face as I smelled the hints of fear and nervousness my fellow retainers felt. I barely caught the scent of brimstone before the madame spoken in my ear.

Queen Diadem’s Knight returns to us bringing most noble friends?” she asked in her husky voice in my ear. I could not prevent myself shivering as she had approached not only silently but absolutely invisible to my natural animal senses.

She giggled merrily behind me before stepping forward towards Lord Kestrel. She held a hand out to him as the smell of perfume and brimstone wafted over me. “I have missed you deeply, my Dread Bird.” she stated softly. From the hearty laughter, I knew she had made a lewd face to my master teasing him innocently. “Come in and be at peace my most noble of guests.” she continued in the same husky teasing voice. I presumed she felt the nervousness from my companions from Atlantis but ignored it focusing fully on Kestrel. “Including you Hawke.” she added as if it was an afterthought.

She easily pulled my Master from his seat to stand beside her. With one arm wrapped around his waist holding him tightly at her side, she lifted the back of his hand to her lips. She continued ignoring the other two Atlantian standing shocked as she guided Lord Kestrel towards her doors. I fell in step behind them with Hawke coming up the rear. Sert and Meli remained frozen, watching us move easily forward into Madame Rouge’s brothel.

The harpies brought you word of our impending arrival?” I asked walking at her heels. With a single glance back, she gave me a quick nod as she brought us to lavishly decorated table set apart from the area occupied by her normal patrons. She took the place beside Lord Kestrel as I sat upon her other side. Hawke sat between the sisters that fond over him instantly while beside my Master’s opposite side. A young woman took a place beside me to feed me as the first time I had visited here. Lord Kestrel, Cavalier Hawke, and myself accepted the food and drink without hesitation or resistance. My brain nagged me until I had my say to the cavalier. “Remember the advice you have received, Hawke.” I told him directly. “Tell them!” I added in a commanding growl. This drew me a look from Rouge where I sat next to her. I smiled and gave a head tilt towards the cavalier gaining a soft giggle and smile from her.

Yes!” he snapped back. “I will!” he retorted as the sisters paused in their feeding routine. He leaned to each of their ears whispering his decision to them. Their face glowed from the happiness that filled them instantly by his simple words that he was staying here for them. Deep kisses followed as the sisters tightened their grip around him. “The rest is in your hands with your heart’s queen, Diadem.” he added as a mischievous gleam glowed in his eyes. With this challenge given and accepted, I felt compelled to inform Rouge of what had happened at her table. A gentle touch of my fingertips upon Rouge’s chin guided her ear to my mouth.

He is staying to protect this village, your establishment and, most of all, the two women he loves that love him back.” I whispered in the most silent purr. She glanced at me as her red eyes burned brighter and her smile ignored hiding her pointed teeth and fangs from the sheer joy she felt. Sert and Meli had finally reached the table spotting my action. Meli glared at me while Sert’s eyes went from Lord Kestrel to myself. Neither moved to take their seat as a woman stood by each of them waiting to service them as we three were being served and treated.

Sit or continue being impolite to our host.” Lord Kestrel told them with a derisive chuckle. The woman beside me chose this moment to feed me a piece of meat gaining a strangle choke from Meli while Sert shuttered seeing my easily accepting this decadent behavior. The woman beside him took him by the elbow bringing him into his seat while the other matched the action with Meli a moment later. “This is a safe residence away from Atlantis, my friends.” Kestrel continued casually. “Nothing happens under Mistress Rouge’s roof unless it’s truly needed.” he informed them before receiving a morsel from a fork held by the madame herself. Slowly Sert and Meli started accepting this custom within the walls of Rouge’s establishment but could not seem to stop being nervous unlike the rest of our group.

They will adjust or maybe they need each other.” the woman at my elbow whispered to me as she held a cup to my mouth. She had held it away from my lips to hide my reaction to her words. She held back like the sisters had during my first visit using only gentle touches to my arm or scratches behind my ears. Her scent was different having a hint of brimstone wafting through the citrus fruit perfume she wore. My eyes caught flashes in my peripheral vision of what could be a thin whip like tail coiling and uncoiling behind her. A soft peek upon my cheek was followed by a whispered assurance. “I am not what I appear but you are safe with me.” she told me.

I have faith that Mistress Rouge would not seek harm to come to me.” I returned in a whisper barely moving my lips as I spoke. “You can explain it to me once we are in private.” I added secretly to her. I returned to casually chatting with my companions around the table without fear accepting my safety in her non-human hands. As the meal came to an end, I watched how Meli was torn between staying close to Sert or acting as my protector. I smiled at her and waved her off while my serving woman scratched and petted me ignoring the glares she received from Meli. She and Sert finally left with the two women showing them upstairs to a single room that I could visibly follow until the door closed. Both woman stood at the door for a few minutes before floating away, returning to the serving floor that acted as a tavern room.

I will show you to your room for sleep.” my companion stated. She rose to her feet and offered me a hand. As I took her hand, she place my arm around her waist before snagging my other hand in hers. “I am not as comfortable as my mother, but I hope I can allow you the same peaceful sleep.” she whispered to me as she lead me from the table. I glanced back suddenly noting that Lord Kestrel had already disappeared from our table leaving only Hawke and the two sisters doting over him. “Rouge has him safely apart from the noise and merriment so he may sleep peacefully as well.” she added calmly.

We entered a small room that I remembered well from my last stay. A bottle sat upon the corner table with a pair of crystal goblets waiting to be used. She guided me to a chair making sure a sat comfortably before filling the two goblets with a shimmering yellow tinted liquid. She stepped back giving me a full view of her as she slipped out of her serving dress to reveal an intricate tight leather suit that cover her torso properly. The suit suggested her curves that were mild but still purely feminine in form. Her tailed lashed out a she pulled back her auburn colored hair back revealing small stubs of horns at her temple. Her smile showed no fangs or pointed teeth but nearly perfect human ones.

I am a half-breed of demonic blood.” she admitted to me. She stepped closer placing a goblet in my hand while taking one in her own. “My father was an incubus making me in part a succubi.” she continued her confession. She guided the cup to my lips as she did the same. I drank, as she did, feeling a warm sensation filling me. She smiled softly at me. “I do not need to feed on the life essence of men but will not refuse this need in my male guest.” she told me in a quieter tone. “You will only be pet and caressed to draw you into a deep restful sleep, noble knight.” she added before leading me to the bed. Between the drink and her skillful touch, I was quickly asleep dreaming of kneeling at Dia’s side.

I was awaken before the others, fed, and already preparing the wagon waiting for my companions that will continue this journey to arrive. The horse obeyed my gently worded request without using leads or resorting to physically placing them. The animal half of my being seemed to understand and was understood by these creatures allowing me have them hitched to the wagon quickly and efficiently. The stable boy only double checked the belt buckles linking the straps to the horses. I had learn a bit of this husbandry from Hawke who rarely allowed other to touch his war steed but the innate understanding I seemed to share made it easier for me. I glanced the cavalier slowly exiting to offer helping me with the sisters at his back. Those two women would not let him out of their sight. I believed they feared this was still but a fantastic dream.

I have this well in hand.” I informed him. He stopped and looked embarrassed by being late to help. The sisters giggled at his back with a blush. I took a chance to step towards them with a smile and an outstretched hand. “We have never truly been introduced, I am Kestrel of the Redpath clan.” I told them with a half bow. They giggled each taking my furry paw in their hand for a common human greeting.

Hannah and..” one stated.

Sasha.” the other concluded. They both smiled at me and gave me a quick curtsy.

Well meet.” I returned easily to them. I turned to face Hawke fully. Our hands automatically found they other’s elbow in a firm warriors parting. “No more teasing, I know what I must do, my friend, as you have done.” I told him. He smiled at me and for once I saw true happiness and peace in his face. “And treat them well or I will send Dia’s soldiers to reprimand you.” I added with a wry smirk. He nodded chuckling back at me. The two sisters now approach me one on each side. They hugged me and placed a soft kiss at my cheeks.

Thanks you, our noble knight.” the whispered in my ear tightening their hug around my body. I had barely noticed that Sert, Meli, and Lord Kestrel were on their seat ready to go. I sighed and moved to take my place next to the horses whispering a word for them to start forward. I waved back to Hawke, Hannah, Sasha, and lady Rouge with her daughter standing beside her. I realized that I had not even learn her name but it seemed too late to ask.

Deidra.” sounded in my mind in a soft whisper of her voice. “Be safe and worry not when facing Queen Diadem, her heart will not betray yours.” she added before they disappeared from my view. I sighed as I squared my shoulders. The armor given to me from Dia felt light in comparison to the weight my heart felt at what I must do and reveal to my other Queen. The day passed but our travel was slower as I acted as trader and supplier to the farmers that rushed to meet our wagon as we moved along the roadways. To be truthful, I was nervous but hid it deep with waves, smiles, and making quick deals in the favor of the farmers, claiming it was the will of their Queen. Did I overstep my limitations? Very possibly but her people need to know she wanted only the best for them and would make it clear in her name.

Kestrel's Journals: Starting the Return Trip To Queen Diadem’s Capitol (11)

I had barely awoken when Meli entered to check upon my state. A young maid followed her carrying a tray of food for our breaking morning fast which she placed upon the table in the cheering well lit nook in the corner. She curtsied before exiting without saying anything, not even a good morning greeting. Meli gave her a single quick confused look before turning her attention to me sitting on the side of my bed. I had not bother undressing the night before wanting a quick departure before Sephina or Meli decided we should stay for my health. Using my walking staff, I gained a standing position and moved slowly to sit at the nook table. Meli gave me a glare but said nothing as she joined me at the breakfast nook.

Stop worrying and eat.” I told her before picking at my plate while gazing out of the window.

How will Sert and our kitten know we are going to leave the city?” she asked calmly between bites of breakfast.

His other set of eyes high in the sky.” I replied with a small chuckle. I pushed aside the glass panel covering the window hole. I flurry of flapping sounded before a small harpy landed on the parapet outside the windowsill. “He seems to have befriend a flight of harpies during his adventures.” I reported softly. I held out a fruit to the harpy before finding paper and quill. She ate slowly cautiously while keeping a watchful eye on my actions. I quickly wrote a note for Sert and the other Kestrel informing them to meet us at the southern gate. “Bring this to your feline friend, please.” I requested holding out the tightly rolled parchment. The harpy squawked and cooed nodding her human like head towards me before gentle taking the scroll from my hand. “Thank you!” I called after her as she launched like an arrow skyward.

How is he so comfortable in the other world?” Meli asked suddenly. She was looking at me with a look of betrayal in her eyes and mind.

He is very adaptable and uncommonly wise for his young age.” I returned slowly. I knew she’d consider my countenance and slow pace of speech as a sign of pensiveness and not weakness. “I have given him no training directly but he must learn from observing and listening to all of us.” I continued with the same slow pace. “As far as a hidden ally, would you ask for a better companion?” I added with a shrug in her direction.

Best ally possible but I believe it’s his feral nature that allows him to react quicker and with better thoughts than most of us.” she returned calmly. I looked at her feeling her mental nervousness and worry but pure serenity showed in her face and behaviour. “Do you believe Sertian discovered as much about the guards as we have?” she added with a smirk. Her childish ideology to challenge and compare herself with Sert was the core of her smirk and self-control she showed.

I do not know but we asked the right question before Sephina, which he could not.” I replied with a soft chuckle. “He might not have connect the war rumours with the distracted guards.” I reminded her. “He does overlook simple solutions often.” I stated softly under my breath. She smiled and nodded to me.

The rest of the meal was filled with minor comments and conversations mostly about our return route and method of transportation. As much as I did not worry about walking, Meli could not allow this constantly using my still weakened state as requiring a carriage, horses, or even an ox drawn wagon. I did not argue that vehemently against her thoughts but reminded her it was easier and simpler for us to walk as we have done many times before. She would not relent and had already called in a servant to ask about finding a means of transportation for us. It seemed that we would be walking but that was changed by other hands.

A lone guard escorted us directly from the inner enclave to the southern gates of the city. A horse pulled wagon sat with Sert at the reins, young Redpath standing beside him, and a man in burnished armour sat upon a war horse with them. I looked at the wagon nothing the secondary set of seats and the stacks of provisions loaded upon it’s back section. I stopped and waved at this transport with a curious look. Sert only shrugged thumbing towards the armoured horseman.

Transporting supplies to villages giving an easier travel path for my feline friend’s master.” Hawke stated from behind his visor. He lifted his visor smiling broadly at me. “Cavalier Hawke from the southern lands at your service, sir.” he announced with a quick crisp bow from his saddle. Young Redpath moved towards me to assist me into one of the secondary seats behind Sert.

Accept the lie and simply accept this, sir.” the feline purr whispered to me. “Sert has filled in the gaps in my information about your weaken state, sir.” he added in the same purring whisper.

I agree with your Royal Guard.” Meli stated louder and more firmly making sure I was being forced upon the wagon’s back seat. “Let’s not look upon providence offer for a faster and quicker trip towards home, sir.” she added. I agreed with only a few glares at my three retinue members. And our voyage across the southern lands upon this side of the mountains began with a fast pace and only minor discussions between the Cavalier, Sert, and my feline namesake. I will admit that I stayed mostly in a quiet state of self-contemplation and naps until we approached the village that was supposedly the destination for the supplies. We had reached here just after dusk instead of two days of walking which was pleasant in it’s own way. But my heart felt anxiety as we stopped before our place of residence for the night, a brothel which I recognized. Mistress Rouge the demoness.

Yes, we know what type of establishment this is!” was growled out drawing my attention to Sert and Meli angrily facing off with Hawke and young Redpath. “It is truly the safest place for us to stay the night!” the feline continued angrily retorting to Sert and Meli.

But it’s a ...” she snapped back but was interrupted by myself.

Lady Rouge is an acceptable choice!” I squawked at their back. I saw them tense and slowly turn to face me. “And yes, I should stop in to have a discussion with her, Little Kestrel.” I added bringing the same shocked look on the feline’s face. Hawke stood with a hint of blush on his cheek and a mirthful chuckle in his throat. None had noticed that the madame herself had moved to stand behind our feline companion.

The Queen Diadem’s Knight returns to us bringing most noble of friends?” she asked in her husky voice in young Redpath’s ear. I saw him shiver as she giggled merrily behind him. She moved flowing like water to my side of the wagon holding out her arms to me. “I have missed you deeply, Dread Bird.” she stated to me with a teasing smile and hearty laugh. “Come in and be at peace my most noble of guests, including you Hawke.” she concluded as she pulled me from the wagon to my feet beside her. She kept an arm tightly around waist to keep me on my feet while bringing the back of my hand to her lips for a gentle kiss. She ignored the other’s stunned looks as she walked me into her establishment directly to a lavishly table set aside from the normal patrons.

The harpies brought you word of our impending arrival?” the feline asked as he rushed to follow us. She glanced back to give him a quick nod. She sat beside me and started feeding me and holding a cup of drink to my lips which I accepted. I noted two women, possibly sisters, pulling Hawke into a seat between them as they took turns spoiling him. “Remember the advice you’ve received, Hawke.” young Redpath stated more stiffly to the Cavalier. “Tell them!” he ordered bluntly. This drew a quick look from Rouge that singled the kitten to sit upon her other side.

Yes, I will!” Hawke snapped back. He leaned by the ear of each woman at his side in turn. Their face brightened instantly at his whispered words followed by a deep kiss. “The rest is in your hands with your Queen Diadem!” he returned with a mischievous gleam in his eyes directed at the feline. What followed between Rouge and Redpath showed he had grown and learned much faster than I thought possible. He touched Rouge’s chin gently guiding her ear close to his mouth to whisper to her. I did not hear his word but saw the smile brightening Rouge’s face. Meli and Sert stood staring at us confounded and confused.

Take a seat or continue this impolite behaviour.” I told them with a chuckle. Another woman sat by young Redpath starting to spoil him by hand feeding him food and drink which he accepted as easily as Hawke and myself did. A strangle choke escaped Meli and shudder rocked Sert as a woman take their arm to place them into seats across from us. “This a safe residence away from Atlantis, my friends.” I continued casually. “Nothing happens under Mistress Rouge’s roof unless it’s truly needed.” I informed them before receiving a tasty morsel from Rouge. Slowly Sert and Meli started accepting the hand feeding but still looked nervous while the rest of us chatted casually back and forth.

I felt the energy of the place including the waves of strength Rouge sent my way. I did not mention anything about the plague village nor the trade deals while truly allowing myself a chance to relax. I knew I would eventually explain my weakened state to Rouge, but I also knew she would not ask. accepting my silence and secrets. This was the safety of Rouge’s domain where people’s wants would be ignored over what they truly needed. She had made her own kind of miracles since she stayed behind here to make this place. She knew me, walked at my side for a time, but would not interfere or harm others. I try to touch my companions mind but found myself blocked.

That’s not allowed here Kestrel.” she whispered deeply in my ear. A soft touch of her lips on my cheek held heat but nothing evil. “That ability of yours could cause problems in a place where needs that burn bright are often overlooked by the dark desires in people’s minds.” she continued in the same soft deep whisper. I shivered surprise by this feeling washing through me from her warm breath. “What one truly needs is always easy to draw forth even if the mind believes it not what they want.” she told me with another warm peck on the cheek. “Your true and deepest need cannot be found in this or any worlds, silly bird.” she added with a soft giggles. I turned to lean closer to her ear.

I thought our mutual teasing was what we needed the most.” I whispered in her ear. “Or is that you need to tease as many as possible, old friend?” I suggested before returning the soft ephemeral pecks upon her cheek. I pulled back to look in her glowing blood red eyes. “I will watch and read their unspoken speech as you wish, Mistress Rouge.” I told her returning my focus upon our group at this personal partially secluded table.

I first observed Sert and Meli whom usually acted like sibling while around me. The glances they threw at each other were filled with worry as they saw the attention placed upon them by the woman at their outer sides. He blushed each time his escort touched his arm, whispered in his ear, or a teasing peck on his cheek. Every time he blushed, Meli body would tense making her escort repeat the action Sert had suffered, to her making her tremble and look nervously around the table. Sert would tense at her gaze but a new touch returned him into a blushing state. I avoided her glance noting their overly protective nature rise to be crushed down with a simple but teasing touch. I already knew they would up in the same room laying back to back to protect each other.

They could be a good couple but it is not what either of them truly need.” Rouge whispered in my ear. I nodded before my eyes turned to observe the Cavalier Hawke. “That one is about to get what he needs and give those two sisters what they need as well.” she added as I made my evaluations.

This man was an oddity, showing both wants and needs merging into his true desires which was these two sisters at his elbows. Their touch was not subtle as when the meal started as both would make him drink with their mouth in soft kisses to his lips. Their hands moved along his body in a constant slow pattern. All three pairs of their eyes glowed with something than went beyond simple lust or love, it was devotions to each other. I had heard but ignored his passing comment to young Redpath that this was as far as he would travel with us but our other companions did not understand. Their whispered words were lost in giggles and merry laughter keeping it a secret for only the three of them to know. This little village was going to be his home and those two would be the heart of his starting family. He was getting both his wants and needs while giving himself over to do the same for those two sisters.

They will be happier being his wives and only acting as serving maids here from tomorrow on.” Rouge informed me in a husky whisper. “It is wonderful to be part of this happening but your kitten is why he is finally accepting this path of happiness.” she added after a quick bite at my earlobe. I sighed but remained silent as my focus now turned toward my name sake.

Kestrel of the Redpath panther clan was not a typical cursed Royal Guards of Atlantis. He seemed to revel in his half beast form unable to be neither human nor a full animal. I had wondered if it could be young age but that did not feel correct. The woman at his elbow feed him with a silver fork and gave him drink from a bronze goblet but kept her touch to simple scratching behind his ear and spoke openly with him. His title as Rouge stated was a bit of a shock but not truly surprising to me. His willingness to throw himself into anything that felt honourable showed itself fully in this title but I knew it could be a weakness. I feared he would resist using violence openly to keep both honour and true justice alive. It could have been my fault showing him the darkest side of honourable behaviour towards the traitorous fairy. I sighed and looked down at my half-full plate.

He is wise, cautious, and has the most potential I have ever witness since meeting you, Genin.” Rouge’s husky whisper touched my ears. A hand cupped the back on my head twisting my face to meet hers. A kiss that was both passionate but chaste touched my lips. “You should simply relax and let me take care of your needs like all the previous time I did so, my dearest friend.” she states after the kiss. She helped to my feet leading me away from the noise and the crowd into her private lounge. The escorts diverted my companions attention as I was whisked away except for the Cavalier. He simply nodded to me but said nothing returning to his two loved ones. She sat me on the middle of the comfortable divan. Her outer layers dropped away as she brush her crimson hair away from her horns before taking a place in my lap cuddled against me. “Just accept the pleasure of not being alone this night.” she added softly. She wrapped her arms around my body nuzzling at my neck and nothing more. I did not resist sleep taking me but it was pure dreamless blackness that I received. One night truly detached from everything which was my deepest truest need.

The next morning found me feeling refreshed and strong but still only human. My slow sigh rumbled out of me waking Rouge still clutching to me. She rose her head to look into my eyes and placed a soft lingering morning kiss upon my lips. She smiled as she slowly rose from my lap to dress before holding a hand out to me. Words were pointless between us as she lead me to a table that overlooked the main hall of her establishment. A maid entered to place a tray of food before us, curtsy to both of us, and departed ignoring the demonic traits Rouge freely showed. Before the door closed behind her, I spotted the swish of her heart tipped whip-like tail. I gave the madam of the house a quick glance receiving a small smirk in response.

Her father died long ago but she has remained at my side.” Rouge reported quietly. “The seed of men or women is nothing but a treat for my lovely daughter, Kestrel.” she told me with a shy smile. “Regular food fills her hunger without her craving to suck the life essence from humans.” she added tilting her head.

She seems like a perfect assistant and loving daughter.” I replied simply before slowly eating. She blushed but said nothing joining me in our shared breakfast. “I am still wondering about the wagon with Hawke remaining here.” I remarked halfway through our meal.

Those supplies are to be shared and traded along the pathway to the royal capitol.” she returned. “This place is accepted and encouraged because we can supply any and all their needs.” she continued between bites. I nodded but I am sure the look on my face must have warned her about my unspoken thoughts. “This is now the duty of your cat to bring more comfort and help to the people his new Queen requires.” she added softly. She smiled with mischievous glint in her eyes.

What do you know of this Queen that has claimed him as her Knight?” I asked slowly.

She returned to her stolen kingdom to sacrifice herself for her people to be protected from the beastly king that took the throne.” she answered quickly and crisply. “I believe this is why your kitten decided to help her but I still do not understand how he saved her life.” she continued, tapping a lone finger at her pursed lips. “The Royal Sword was a replica of the true weapon but it still shattered at the back of Princess Diadem’s neck.” she explained slowly. “He did nothing until the blade shattered then he knocked back the false ruler and allowed the guards of this land to execute him instantly.” she stated with a shrug. “He stood unafraid that she would die and moved at the most honourable moment to rally the troops around the true royal.” she told me slowly. “I cannot explain more than order and peace has returned with her return to the throne.” she concluded.

I cannot think of anyway for him to make this happen.” I returned slowly and pensively. “He does not wield any form of magic that I know of yet.” I continued in that same pensive pace. “But it does sound like he performed a truly good action for the people and the Queen.” I added with a shrug. She nodded giving my a soft pleased smile.

We regrouped at the front of the establishment, myself being the last to arrive with Rouge once more appearing fully human at my side. She waited until I was in place upon the wagon’s seat before whispering something to young Redpath which made him smile and possibly blush. I held back touching their minds but watched the feline and cavalier parting ways. The sister stood by him and both came forward to hug our cat and, placing a kiss upon his fuzzy cheeks, they quickly whispered words to him. I sat watching only as our group lost one member but not our means of quicker travel. Sert and Meli stood aside speaking to the matron’s daughter. The girl’s tail was perfectly hidden as she had a lone hand on the elbow of those two.

Once Meli and Sert sat upon the front seat, our trip continued leaving waves behind us to our hostess, her daughter, and Hawke’s new family. I listened barely to the banter between Sert and Meli as they teased each other like siblings normally would. Young Repath walked ahead of us with a bouncing step as he waved and bowed to farmer or called them over for quick handing over of goods and trades. He acted like this was perfectly natural for him dealing with humans as if they are no different from him. Even Sert and Meli did not behave this casually and easily with the people of the outer worlds during their first trip. My mind returned to the problem at hand for me missing most of the events until we arrived at the royal capitol.

Redpath's Journals: The Last Stretch (11)

The next morning found found me in a bed still groggy and fully disoriented. I heard the shuffling of clawed feet nearby drawing my attention. Rouge was setting a breakfast platter upon a side table in the room I had slept in, but it was not the lounge she had put me to sleep in. I stretched lazily in the bed alerting her that I was awake. I paused for but a moment realizing she had removed my armor and slipped on sleepwear while I slumbered. She turned to look at me with that closed mouth smile while her hair had returned to hiding her horns.

Breakfast is ready once you feel like eating.” she announced calmly. “Hawke is getting his breakfast in bed by those infatuated sisters so you are stuck with me as dining companion.” she continued merrily. She motioned me to join her as she took a place at the table. “And your virtuous are still intact as per your true wishes.” she added followed by a deep bell like giggle.

But you are the first to actually see me in my naked fur.” I replied rising slowly to my feet. I moved gracefully slow to sit beside her. She gave me a lewd wink but did not comment. “But are not demons evil by nature?” I asked softly while eyeing my plate. She sighed deeply drawing my focus to her face.

Those that did not escape before the godlet tossed his broken projects into the infernal domains have been turned evil by Lucy.” she remarked without actual anger. “The free demons have either assimilated into earthly societies or hide away in deep mountains and forests.” she explained calmly. “But many of us have been hunted down by religious madmen claiming us no better than the devils that perverted our kind after the infernal gates were mostly locked up.” she added. I could see the yellowish tear that formed in her eyes but were not shed.

That is good piece of wisdom to learn.” I returned softly. I reached out to squeeze her hand showing I understood and accepted her as a friend. “I am still worried about meeting up with Lord Kestrel in the northern lands.” I admitted to her. She tapped a finger on her lips for a moment.

No words of the Atlantian group arriving in the northern enclave where the minor nobles of this land escaped to.” she informed me directly. “I can send words to affiliated business to keep an eye out for your Master and inform him that you are on your way.” she offered hesitantly. I sighed this time.

He does not know I am suppose to be following him.” I told her quickly. “But I am assured that he knows which is why he used an illusionary diversion to lead me down this pathway.” I revealed hesitantly. She giggled heartily at my admission.

You’ve already learn to do bad things for a good reason which is a good sign that you are learning quickly.” she returned still giggling at me. I could not even glare at her considering her words as an actual compliment. “If you want, I can send word to a flight of harpies to find your Master’s group and report their location to you.” she suggested with a small smirk. I glanced at her between bites before slowly shaking my head.

I should be doing this on my own.” I returned.

Even your Lord Kestrel depends on others, does he not?” she replied quickly. I sighed agreeing to her offer. The rest of the meal was passed with mild casual comments but it was not until I stood once more with Hawke at the door before she talked more directly to me. “Keep this pendant on and the harpies bringing you information will find you no matter where you are, understand?” she stated to me. I took the pendant from her hand and placed it around my neck instantly.

I thank you Lady Rouge for both your hospitality and your thoughtfulness towards me.” I replied bowing deeply to her. “If I have a chance, I will visit in the future.” I added before we turned to walk away.

It seems you had a good evening.” the cavalier teased as we were out of hearing range of the still open door.

As good and as virtuous as your evening.” I returned with a soft chuckle. “But why not let those two sisters show you how deeply they truly love you?” I asked elbowing him. “You speak of my heart but ignore the heart of two sisters willing to share you just to be happy and make you happy.” I remarked bluntly.

It would only be a physical and empty act.” he returned slowly and sadly.

You love them and fear hurting them by letting them love you back, foolish man.” I stated directly. “As for Queen Diadem, she’d die long before I would or she’d have to leave and live a life far beneath her status.” I finally admitted to him. “That is why I must continue my path and not fail her.” I added looking away from him. I could feel his gaze upon me.

Oh.” he interjected softly. “I did not know, my friend.” he stated resigned. “As for those sisters, you are correct that fear of hurting them or myself holds me back.” he continued calmly. “I will consider your words and be more truthful with those two.” he added in a half whisper. With a quick glance and smirk we laughed as we progressed along our path to the northern enclave city. The trip was filled with laughter and pleasant views of farmlands and happy citizens. It was upon the second day of our walk that a harpy came upon us. With quick words, I prevented Hawke from drawing a weapon upon this winged messenger. The harpy’s speech was hard to understand but old memories of the rare Avian Royal Guards language help me decipher her message. It was not good news since Lord Kestrel was presently helping a village besieged by a mysterious plague. He would be late arriving within the city barely a half weeks journey for myself.

I thank you.” I replied to the harpy. “Please maintain your vigilant watch without being seen nor infected.” I told her. Out of an unknown compulsion, I reached out and scratched the harpy behind her ear-tuff. She pressed into the scratch and cooed softly making me smile and purr back to her. “Even the Avian Guards enjoy a playful scratching.” I added as an explanation to my human companion.

You can speak the language of Harpies?” he asked mildly confused.

No, but the similarities to the Avian tongues helps me understand them.” I returned quickly. He shock his head and shrugged as we stepped back to allow the harpy to take to the skies once more. “”We need not rush since my Master is dealing with a plague in a small village.” I informed Hawke quickly. “The Harpies will report once he has started moving once more.” I added with a shrug.

So we do a few random jobs to assist the Queen and show off her noble Royal Knight?” he remarked back with a smirk. I laughed back while nodding my agreement. I did not know at that time how long Lord Kestrel would be delayed but I am sure Dia adored hearing about our actions in her name breaking up bandit groups and helping farmers getting the product to villages and towns to replenish the much depleted resources. Nearly two and half week had passed since I swam from the ship to the coastal landing point and word from the harpies only sounded more worrisome to me.

Word from the harpies suggest something is wrong with my Master.” I finally confided to Hawke as we camped at the far end of the field to the city we were traveling to reach. “They report that he’s moving slowly and using his walking stick to assist his motion.” I added slowly. I probed at the fire idly trying not to let my worry drive me into meeting Lord Kestrel before he even reached this city.

It may simply be exhaustion from dealing with the plague in that village he saved.” my companion countered slowly. “You will meet him once he enters the city and can track his movement personally.” he continued his attempt to encourage me. I shrugged back to him unable to avoid the worry growing in my mind. “We can tour the city and gain knowledge of the streets and pathways you can use to follow your Lord.” he added with a little smirk. I nodded and signaled my decision to go sleep. As I rose to my padded feet, the fire flared higher and brighter blinding both of us temporarily. Our vision returned slowly allowing us to notice a pair of teenage girl sat in the diagonal position to Hawke and myself.

Be not afraid!” one announced loudly.

Hush sister, we are not angelic idiots!” the second chided the first. This lead to both young ladies to giggle as I had a chance to fully examine them and their clothing. They appeared to be in the Greek and Roman countenance and style but they seemed to lightly glow as they sat laughing at their own joke.

Do you know or recognize them, Kestrel?” Hawke asked as his hand went to the hilt of his sword. He attempted rising to his feet but looked confused as he fought to move. “What are you witches?” he added as anger filled him.

Hold your anger.” I told him looking from one to the other. “They are deities if I am correct.” I added quickly. The cavalier slumped as his body relaxes but his eyes continued glaring from one girl to the other and back.

Correct.” the first chimed merrily. She clapped her hands together. “I knew one of our boy’s retinue would recognize our divinity.” she added giggling maniacally. I groaned as my mind found their names and title.

The Greek deity of Chaos, Lady Eris, and her sisterly counterpart, Discordia, goddess of Chaos for the Romans.” I stated out loud with a hint of a growl in my voice.

We should have changed dresses and could have laughed at him for a bit.” Discordia rebuked her counterpart.

We are not here for our own pleasure this once, but that kitten’s worries.” Eris snapped back going from merry giggles to a cold stern look. “Our adoptive son, your Lord Kestrel, will be fine.” she directly told me. Both their faces had become very serious as they ignored Hawke’s presence to stare at only me.

This is barely the amount of damage and exhaustion he suffered being dashed against the barred gates of the Hells.” Discordia stated bluntly at me. “This is nothing for you to worry about kitten.” she added quickly. I heard the harpies before seeing them as a trio circled over head squawking angrily at the two deities. The goddesses glared at the birds angrily screaming back at them.

You dare to try ordering us around you feathered rats?” Eris howled as their hands began glowing with magical energy. I felt the tremors of a recognizable power at my back. I need not turn to know who came to stand behind me.

But I can, younglings.” a deep musical voice washed over all of us. The flames of our fire turned brilliant shades of greens and yellows rising tall. A pair of harpies landed by the cavalier’s back as the last one took it’s place next to Lord Death at my back. “Leave now!” Death stated in a deep powerful harmony. The goddesses of Chaos flashed out of existence at his command. “Stop worrying, Lord Kestrel is not to be claim though weakened by his actions to do the correct action.” he added in a whisper in my ear.

Thank you since their words caused more confusion than light-heartening feelings.” I replied with a relaxed smile. The harpy had her head under my paw rubbing against my thigh cooing softly. “Thanks you my feathered friends for assisting.” I added with a soft purring chuckle. Lord Death moved to sit by our fire between my seat and Hawke’s position.

Their words are linked to knowledge you will discover if your Master tells you.” Death stated softly. “Lord Kestrel will explain it much better than those two madwomen.” he added with a melodious chuckle. Hawke looked pale as he stared at Lord Death sweating profusely. My chuckle joined Death’s but was more dissonant than his.

He is not here to collect either of us Hawke.” I assured him gently. “He walked with us from the moment I meet Dia until we left her castle.” I informed him in mock casualness. “I believe he has come because he sensed my deep set worry for my Master.” I continued hoping to calm the cavalier’s fears. “Now even I’d be worried if a dragon had arrived since they remain strictly in their own territories.” I added trying to get my companion’s mind off the guest in our midst.

It’s not why he is leery of my presence young Redpath.” Death casually remarked. “I have ferried many in his life to the other side, the one most predominant in his heart.” he added in a softer sadder tone.

I am the only one to blame for her death.” Hawke snapped back. “I should have been at her side. I should have protected her.” he added angrily. Tears poured freely from his eyes as he looked at the fire as self loathing was clear upon his twisted tear streaked face.

She does not blame you.” Death retorted with a hint of a sour tone in his musical voice. “Crossing over would give the answer I state but then, you would never be able to complete all the labors foreseen in your life.” he continued quietly. His musical voice had turned into a sad dirge matching his emotion on this topic. “She wants you to be happy and live on for her.” he added while Hawke simply sobbed.

Your actual fear, to allow those sisters loving you, is you failing to protect them.” I commented slowly and pensively. “Then become the guardian of their little village to always be close enough to protect them.” I told him before laughing. “Sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution, Hawke.” I added looking across the flames to him.

That truly is a simple solution and also the best answer he could receive.” Death agreed with a slow nod of his cowled skull of a head. Hawke looked from me to Death and back again. “And my duties here are truly done now.” he added and faded into darkness. The flames returned to normal orange red in color in our fire pit upon Lord Death’s departure.

I have truly been told for once.” the cavalier remarked with a slow chuckle. “I concede and follow this plan once you are safely back with your Master, alright?” he told me with a small smile. He used the back of his hand to wipe the tears from his eyes and cheeks as he finally looked happy.

We can return along this path giving Lady Rouge a chance to see Lord Kestrel and for you to return to your beautiful ladies.” I returned with a smirk.

And you can stop in to visit your Queen and love once before you return to Atlantis.” he countered with the same smirk. A moment later, the trio of harpies moved away to take flight leaving us alone and ready to truly rest for the night. I dreamed of seeing Dia once more and being truthful to her. I feared her reaction learning the true reason I cannot be at her side even if I or especially because I love her.

The next few days were passed with the two of us exploring the city and getting everything memories. The oddness of the guards’ in attention to our presence was worrisome but helpful to me. I found multiple paths into and out of the multiple chambers that Lord Kestrel would be meeting with the nobles. Unbeknownst to Hawke, I left messages to those Dia wished to have return and assist her rule over her kingdom. It was barely a handful of the nobles that had escaped from Dia’s kingdom when the internal invasion had occurred. I did not simply leave a message but watched their reactions from the multiple hiding spots I had found. Tears of joy for being remembered by their young Queen was refreshing and encouraging to see.

A betrayer like myself could never return alive.” one whispered under his breath. As I watched, he drew out a curved dagger and aimed it at his own stomach. His willingness to die to repay Dia for the betrayal he had committed. My hand was wrapped around the wrist that held the dagger while my other hand had a firm grasp at the back of his neck preventing him to proceed with his self execution.

The Queen sent her Knight to offer you this, foolish man.” I growled in his ear. “Do not waste your life before kneeling before your Queen and ask her for forgiveness.” I continued holding him immobilize. “Show her majesty the honor she sees within you.” I added bluntly. I was back in hiding before he could turn or move. I watched his emotions warring on his face before tears slowly ran down his cheeks. The dagger returned to his waist in it’s sheath as his body straightened and he actually smiled.

I left him creeping silently through passages overlooked by most of residents of this place. Upon a peripet of the castle like central city, I learned that Lord Kestrel had arrived but only Meli and himself headed for my location. Sert had slipped into the crowd but still being viewed by a harpy flying high in the empty sky. I scribbled a quick note for Hawke to rendezvous with Sert and assist him while I stayed by Lord Kestrel. He did eventually catch me hiding under the table as he sat with Sephina talking. With a quick order from him, I was on my way to join Sert and Hawke on whatever mission my companion had been assigned. Finding Sert and Hawke ready to start fighting had me pause for but a moment before I stepped in.

Stop this, now!” I growled as I stepped between them. With a single glare at each had them stepping back and looking embarrassed. “Sertian this is the Cavalier Hawke, and Hawke this is the Honor Guard Sertian that serves my Master.” I told them quickly. Sert looked confused at me but remained silent.

Sorry squire, but he was making rude remarks about the guards and asking rather questionable inquiries.” the cavalier stated with a shrug. “I questioned his right to make such negative comments and you arrived before this became complicated.” he added subdued. I sighed before turning towards Sert.

You must have noticed that the guards are acting preoccupied, have you not?” he asked me softly in Atlantian.

Yes.” I interjected in Atlantian. “But we should speak the local language.” I told him in the common tongue of the these lands. “Lord Kestrel wishes you to discover why the guards are distracted.” I stated calmly.

You placing Diadem back upon her throne would be part of their worries since the nobles of Her lands escaped to here.” Hawke supplied quickly. “Nothing else is being discussed publicly by the city guards on the southern and western edge of the outer city.” he added looking pensive.

Only a few of those nobles have been invited to return.” I returned quickly. “Invitations handed to them by Her Majesty’s chosen Knight.” I continued easily. My eyes had remained on Sert’s face while I spoke. His eyes grew wide as he soundlessly mouthed the word knight. “Yes, I stuck my nose into a mess and come out of it with a noble title upon my shoulders.” I stated to him slowly. “But I doubt that is enough for the guards allow us to move around absolutely disregarded.” I added softer.

I am sorry warrior Sertian for jumping to the wrong conclusion about your actions.” Hawke stated to Sert before bowing deeply to him. “Shall we work together?” he asked with a little smirk on his face. I smirked at Sert myself as I nodded my agreement to the cavalier’s assistance. With a sigh, Sertian nodded his own agreement.

We moved to the northern and eastern areas of the city?” Sert asked looking from me to the cavalier. We both nodded and started moving towards the northern pathways inside the city. We mostly listen and made mild inquires but the populous did not seem to know anything of value along our pathway northward.
